Chulucanas, located in the province of Morropón (Piura Region), Peru, is a town renowned for its unique ceramics.
The pottery crafted in this town has been renowned since ancient times and has now gained global recognition. The designs are diverse, with a prevalent use of black and white.
Chulucanas pottery is made using clay, sand, mango leaves, and the local climate. The clay is sourced from quarries rich in yellow and black clay, which contain particles that contribute to the plasticity and organic content of the pottery. This unique clay also adds a lustrous finish when burnished.
The artisans of Chulucanas utilize ancient techniques passed down through generations, inspired by the Vicús and Tallán cultures. Each ceramic piece undergoes a meticulous process involving over a dozen steps. The clay is shaped by hand and foot, using wooden pallets and stones to refine its form. Natural pigments, derived from leaves and soil, are then applied for the first layers of color. The pieces are fired in an oven and submerged in smoke from mango leaves for several hours, resulting in the iconic black hue of Chulucanas pottery. Finally, a black stone is used to hand-polish and give the ceramic a dazzling sheen.
